College Major Question?

Hey I am a Junior in High school. I plan on attending college, and then starting my own business. I want to live in a small town (10,000 or less residents) and start a floral shop. In the store I plan on selling floral arrangements, potted plants, garden plants, starter fruit/ vegetable plants.

I am going to go to college and major in Business, but I can't decide what horticulture or floriculture to major in. I was planning on horticulture services and ornamental horticulture. But I am not sure.

What major would you advise me to take?

Thank you for the help

  1. i would major in business administration and minor in horticulture/botany

    or double major

  2. I love that you have your dream figured out!

    But...

A town so small isn't likely to have enough of a market to support a fine flower shop, unless it's in a metropolitan area with other towns or a city. Most very small towns are largely rural. Your customers will be looking more for a plant nursery for crops. And private nurseries have been pushed out by large chains, such as Wal-mart and Home Depot, that can offer much lower prices.

Your shop idea may still work if you find a very upscale, moneyed community to have it in.

It's still worth studying. Your business major will give you good skills for any business you do. You can probably do a double minor. No need to decide in stone right now, is there? Get to college first, take a class or two in each, then decide.
