I was attending Florida State University (FSU) and when I found out I was pregnant I talked with my counselor about online classes and I ended up switching to an online major so that I can finish up my remaining classes all online. I am looking for advice from those who have taken college classes and had a baby at the same time. The semester starts next week, I am due October 19th, and the semester ends in the begining of December. I am looking for opinions on how many classes I should take. I want to take as many as I can so I can graduate sooner, but I don't want to overload my self since a baby will be here right in the middle of the semester. HELP PLEASE!!!!

  1. I was signing up for my very last semester back in 2007 in the spring when I found out I was prego with my first. His due date was April 20, and the semester ended on the 24 a Tuesday. Final exams were to be taken April 17 until the 23 so I had no choice but to not do that semester.

After he was born I was able to do summer courses online until I got my BA.

It was pretty good to do it online, cause most of the time while I was taking the online course I was breastfeeding or changing a diaper.

  2. I wasn't pregnant when I took online classes but I was working full-time. (basically the same thing, without the cuteness)

I would recommend not taking more than 3 classes at a time. They all require you to teach yourself which can be very difficult when it comes to courses in math and sciences. The english classes will also have you reading ALOT so be prepared, in fact, read to Ryden, it will make the baby smart!

But be prepared to write alot of papers, likely have scheduled chat times, and have alot of homework problems to complete depending on the class.

Hope everything goes well, and don't overload yourself the first 2 semesters either, college can always wait but your baby needs your love and attention now. They won't stay tiny forever and you wouldn't want to stress yourself out, the baby can sense alot and your mood and stress levels are apart of that. Good luck! Congrats!

  3. I had a friend that had a baby during her 3rd year of college. I was also a single mother at the time, but did not have my baby while going to college. She ended up taking a term off and them coming back the following term. She didn't change her major or anything. There is help out there. Go to the government agencies and apply for housing, food stamps, etc. Where we went to school, there was family housing as well and the daycare was right there in the housing community. I don't want to say it won't be tough, because it will. You may be up with a screaming baby at night when you have a paper due the next day. It will take dedication, planning, and presence. Most off all, know that your doing it for your baby. If you have to, change to a university that has the major you wanted to do in the first place that supports single parents. More and more are coming about because they are recognizing this issue. Good Luck!!!
