Question:

College advice...not just on admissions?

So I'm a freshman at Brandeis. It's a nice school and all, but I'm having an existential crisis. You see, it's very Jewish, and I'm not. I have a very nice scholarship, a VERY nice scholarship, likely BECAUSE I'm not Jewish. I didn't really think it would be a big deal. I've been here two days now, and every time religion comes up in conversation, I passively admit I'm not Jewish, and things get awkward really quickly.

Should I even be at this school? I mean, I got the Presidential scholarship, so I guess I'm qualified academically, but theologically I feel pushed aside. Should I try to transfer? And if I do, can I get scholarship money like I'm getting now?

  1. Give it the semester if you can.  I am sure you will be able to find a friend to help you feel more at ease with the Jewish practices and rules. I would find an adviser to talk to, maybe they can give you advice.  Your grades are there, this is just a new challenge.  Don't let it beat unless you know the situation is wrong for you.

  2. i think you should stick with it. learn about the jewish religion. make new friends.

i think this a great chance for you to learn how to deal with different situations.

  3. I'd say first evaulate the program you're in - is it a strong academic program that provides you the best education you can get (within your economic means)  If so then I would stay there.

The "awkwardness" is expected since you've been put smack dab in the middle of a diversity issue at its finest.   But, values aside - take the time to make friends, appreciate what others believe and get a darn good education.   Good schools are 'connected' if you know what I mean.  This might be a lead into a good job.

Unless the school and the environment makes you miserable and violates your morals you should work on tolerance.  Focus on your studies and making good friends.   This is a good test for you to make it through a program where you are the unique one fighting the norm.

Hope you shine and learn a great deal at this school.  You are at a good age to examine your beliefs and views of the world around you.   If you choose to continue into grad school, you will have another adventure to look forward to.
