College and state residency question?

I asked this in another section but I didn't get any replies.

If I were to go to a private school in a different state for a year, then take a whole year off, and then go to a state school, who I have qualified residency status, since I lived and worked in that state for a year and paid taxes?

It depends on the state.  Call the admissions office of the state school and find out how long you must reside in that state to be considered a resident.
