  1. Hi Lattaelover,

Actually, it's never too early to be thinking about what you're going to do with dance after high school because, based on the plan (or plans) you map out, you may find you need to make some changes in your training well before you turn 18. The first thing I'd recommend that you do is to get hold of the print edition of the Dance Magazine College Guide:

    http://dancemedia.k-online.biz/cgi-bin/B...

By looking through this book, you'll see that there are SO MANY kinds of college dance programs that you'll have a lot to think about in terms of what you prefer and what you don't. For example, in answer to your question, while all college dance programs require some academic classes with books, tests, writing papers and studying, some programs require a lot more academic classes compared with others. It's up to you to decide what kind of programs you'd like to apply for.

The next thing you should do is to start visiting all of the college dance programs that are closest to you, at least to go see their dance performances. Seeing what kinds of shows a college dance program puts on tells you a lot about their program. Do they do a lot of ballet or a lot of modern dance? Do they perform any jazz? What is the range of body types and ethnic groups within the student dancers? How nice is the performance hall where they dance? How packed is the audience? Is the audience very subdued when they clap, or is there lots of shouting? Above all, ask yourself what you enjoyed most or disliked about the shows you see. This will help you to determine what to look for in other colleges, or whether going to a college to major in dance is even right for you. You need to understand that many young dancers choose NOT to attend college for dance in their pursuit of a professional dance career.

Finally, you're just the right age to start getting ready to audition for summer dance intensives in January and February of 2009. You must get practice with auditioning if you ever hope to do well with auditioning for college dance programs. But it's also a very good idea to start attending summer dance intensives once you turn 12. Unless you're currently studying dance at a school that is affiliated with a professional dance company, you really cannot advance far enough in your training to reach the true advanced levels (as measured on a national scale) without attending a selective (meaning acceptance is based on auditions) summer dance intensive.

    Good luck!
