College football rankings: Week three
The third week of the college football season proved to be another exciting one, as several games were taken down to the wire. The result was a great deal of change throughout the middle and bottom of the rankings, while the top five remained stagnant.
Top 5
Nothing changed in the top five as the best teams in the country took care of business against inferior opponents over the weekend. Alabama still remains at number one after smoking Duke, while Ohio State sits in second after defeating Ohio. Boise and TCU
slot in at the three and four spots respectively, leaving the fifth spot for Oregon.
6-10
Texas lost their number six spot to Nebraska, as the Longhorns fall to seventh in week three. Meanwhile, Oklahoma drops out of the seven spot to eighth. The biggest change comes at the nine spot, where Florida moves up from 10th to take Iowa’s
place. The Hawkeyes suffered a loss to Arizona over the weekend and fell to 18th. With Florida moving up Arkansas now rounds out the top ten after a big win over rival Georgia.
11-15
Not a great deal changed between the 11 and 15 spots. Wisconsin held their place in 11th after winning a close one against Arizona State. South Carolina was able to move up a spot to 12th with Arkansas now in 10th. The move
by South Carolina helped Utah on to 13th spot, leaving 14th open to Arizona, who had a stunning upset over Iowa. Rounding out the top 15 is LSU who remains in the same spot after defeating Mississippi State on Saturday.
16-20
The teams between 16 and 20 largely remained the same, but with the introduction of Iowa, switched positions. The 16
spot now belongs to Stanford who defeated Wake Forest and benefited from a close game between Auburn and Clemson, which saw the Tigers drop to 17th. Iowa’s introduction at 18th pushed Miami (FL) down to 19th and USC down
to 20th.
21-25
The bottom section of the rankings welcomed major changes as Houston was dropped after a loss UCLA and Michigan State was added after winning on the weekend to go 3-0. Michigan was also dropped from the Top 20 to 21st after a close win over Massachusetts.
Michigan is followed by West Virginia, who get bumped down with the addition of Wolverines. Penn State also felt the effects of a tight Michigan win and moved down to 23rd. Meanwhile, Oregon State moved up to fill the void left by Arizona and Michigan
State rounds out the rankings in 25th.
