So I start college first year next week. and i wanted to know what should i expect. I am going to a COMMUNITY college so people say high school is different from college. now my school doesn't have large rooms they kinda look like high school rooms .

I was reading a question earlier that some girl said it was really cool that you could just get up and leave anytime you want, to the bathroom. Is that true? you really dont have to ask and wont you look stupid getting up in the middle of class to leave for a unknown reason? jw.

also what about attendances. what happens if im sick and i dont go to school. does ab sentences affect anything? do i need to tell someone i was absent. can i ask my teacher what went on the day before or am i not allowed to ask the teacher do they expect us to ask another student?

  1. Each professor has different rules.  Most do not take attendence.  If you don't show up, they don't care.  At the same time, if you don't show up... and you miss an assignment or a quiz, they don't care either, you won't be able to make it up.  While most do not take attendence, most do have a "participation" grade that will make up a part of your final grade... ususall in the 10-15% ballpark.  If you show up to every class and regularly ask and answer questions you will get an easy 15% of your grade.  If you skip a lot of classes, and spend the whole class texting your friends... you will lose 15% of you grade and the best you can do is an 85%

As far as abscences (I assume that is what you mean by "ab sentences")  If you get sick and aren't going to make it to class, you should call your professor or send them an email and let them know before class... If you get them before class, they will usually be happy to give you any handouts or assignements that will be given in the class you miss.  If you don't call, you won't get in trouble, but they won't give you any credit for anything you miss.

As far as getting up and walking out.  You are an adult now, and will be treated like one.  There is no pricipals office, there is no detention, and there are no demerits.  If you need to use the restroom, just get up and go.  If you need to leave class early, just get up and go.  If you are late to class, just walk in and sit down.  The only time it is a problem is if you are causing a disturbance to the other students.  If walking out of class or coming in late becomes a problem to the other students... you will be asked to leave the class and not come back.

~"WOW! ummmm one more question ... so say im sick i dont come in that Monday cant i just go in Tuesday and ask the professor before class starts to tell me if i missed anything important on Monday that he or she could give me?"

It all depends on the professor... there is no school attendence policy, each professor has their own way of teaching.  There are literally some classes where you can show up for the first day of class, show up for the mid term, then take the final and get a good grade.  Granted you will have to do all the studying and reading on your own, but you will have a sylabus that tells you what to study so you don't really need to be in class.  On the other hand, there are also classes that if you miss a class, you will be docked 1% of your grade.  It really boils down to the individual professor.

GENERALLY, most all classes are somewhere in the middle.  If something happens once, maybe twice in a semester where you don't make it to class, the professor will work with you to give you the info you need.  But if you start abusing this, they will not help at all.  Honesly, it all boils down it if you want to do well or not.  If you do, the professors will see this and they will be more than happy to work with you.  If you s***w off all the time, they will know this and will not be willing to work with you at al.

The key here is to remember that you are an adult, and will be expected to act like one.... if you do you will be just fine.

  2. Yes it is true that you can just get up and go to the bathroom. In college, they consider the students to be more mature and responsible and asking permission to go to the bathroom is pretty juvenile. As far as missing classes, they usually allot a certain number of absences a student can take each semester for each course. It may bring down your participation grade if you miss too many classes. You can usually go see your teacher during their office hours to see what you missed, but you MUST have a good excuse if you missed an exam, so that you can take it later.
