College funding additional amounts?

I know people that have in the past received several grants and it was more than they needed for tuition, labs, and books so they used this money to support their families while in school. Is this legal and how do I do it if it is?

  1. Yes, if you dont live on campus they give you whats left of your grant for rent, and transportation.  After each semester the college sends a check with whats left over from the grant.  You can use it to pay bills, buy food, pay rent, gas money whatever.  Thats why they give you extra.

  2. I think that different grants have different restrictions on how the money can be used, so if you already have some grants you can probably call them up and find out.  There are also private grants out there that you can get from websites like CollegeDegreeFund.com , which are micro-sponsorships from many individuals and companies and do not restrict what you can spend your money on as long as your are an enrolled student at an accredited college or university
