Ok I tried asking this before and got 1 answer so I'm trying it again:

I really, really want to go to Cal Poly SLO. I want to either study oceanography and train sea creatures and be in the shows like at sea world, or I want to be a teacher. At the moment, I'm really leaning toward the teacher idea. Cal Poly SLO is my dream college but I want to know if you think I have the right qualifications to get in.

1. Last semester I got all A's, 4.0 GPA.

2. Score pretty well on tests

3. I'm in a higher level english class this year

4. I am taking bio this year, probably chem next

5. I've already completed 1 year of high school level spanish

6. I'm a freshman.

7. there's just one small problem, since I don't really like team sports, I've never joined anything and have no hobbies.

So my question to you is with this information, am I on the right track to getting into Cal Poly's science or liberal studies programs? Is it too late to pick out a hobby? Any suggestions on a hobby or independent sport I could pursue? And how important is it that an applicant have a serious hobby or interest?

Any and all answers will be read and a best answer will be chosen. This question is EXTREMELY important to me. Thanks. :)

  1. The Navy has an awesome dolphin training program.  If you correlate that with a degree, you will be set (experience and education).

  2. Grades and such are fine but with any school, you better have some other community involvement.

Since you're a Freshman, it's a lot easier than you think.  Just join some clubs that interest you and by the time you need to apply for college, you'll have a full, well balanced resume.

Since you're so interested in marine sciences, I suggest you join a science club or look into starting one up at your school.  If that doesn't work, stick with Spanish and join the Spanish/foreign language club.

Not having a sport may not kill your resume but look into it anyway.  If you want to train sea creatures, then you're going to have to be an excellent swimmer.  Try for the swim team or something of that feel.  Even working at the local pool one summer may help your chances.

Bottom line, it's not really the hobby that you have.  Colleges are just looking for a well-rounded person who is clearly devoted to things outside of learning.  They want to see that you can do more than one thing and that you can do them both well.

Good luck and have fun in high school!  Don't stress too much.

  3. A 4.0 is awesome, and since you're a freshman, it's REALLY good that you've got you mind set on where you wanna go, so you won't regret mistakes later on. Make sure you maintain a HIGH overall academic GPA (in other words, keep those 4.0's coming!). Make sure to take the SAT's and the ACT, until you reach the best score you can. You're definitely on the right track for the science department, & if you're up to it, take AP classes in science if your school offers it. Hobbies are important to some schools, so if you're not into sports, definitely join clubs, & its NEVER too late. You can join a general kind of club, like Key Club, or anything that does community service, if you have no specific hobby. They like to see diverse students. Just to give you an idea, the valedectorian of my school is going there, she had an academic GPA of 4.2, was in choir, & other clubs, and scored an 1800 something on the SAT's. And also, when it gets time to apply, write a killer essay. =) GOOD LUCK & you're definitely in the right track.
