  1. I know what you mean Im disqualified (probably) from them because I have a 3.7 uw GPA...  But I do know that it differs.  I talked to the admissions officer for UPenn when I went for a National Youth Leadership Forum last summer, and he said that what happens is the regional directors pick out students from their area, and then they all sit down (all of the regional directors) and narrow down students together to form their final list.  This means that the regional director could think that if you were to not take the Subject Tests, that it would be alright, but that some of the other ones and the head admissions officer would say that you really should have...  What this all is saying is that you really should take them, because he also said that "Penn is a community of students, as diverse and" etc and so on, basically ending on the note that they take into account all things, but that you would really have to stand out in other areas, and I mean really, as in, like, IB or AP tests, plus like best athlete in your region/National Merit/new Mozart if you were to want to get in without them...  Hope this rambling helps.

  2. Well, UPenn isn't the only school that requires subject tests. Many other top universities do as well. Pretty much, if you want to get into a good 4-year university, you need to take at least two subject tests.

You should take them in the subjects that you are strongest in. There are a variety of different subjects...just check on www.collegeboard.com under Subject tests.

But anyway, you pretty much need to take at least two to get into even a decent university since most require them. Check on various college websites for schools that interest you if you want to be sure.
