College scholoship question here ...?

Ok, last semester and this upcoming semester Financial aid paid for my classes & books (THANK GOD!) & I'm very grateful for this... My sister wrote me & said that I should also apply for scholorships because "she believes" if I get a scholorship - the money could go towards other things like living expences (etc.). I'm a single mom and am wondering if this is true. Would I gain anything by applying scholoships - or would I possibly loose my Financial Aid I'm getting? AND how does it all work? Do scholorships get applied to the classes before financial aid??? Please explain what ever your able to about scholoships & what they can do for me....

Thank you so much! :)

  1. Scholarships generally go directly to the school and get applied first. Financial aid, Pell grants for example, can be applied to things like living expenses, gas, etc. It's been my experience that the financial aid applications like FAFSA get filled out long before scholarship applications; therefore, the scholarships aren't considered when giving financial aid (since you haven't applied for them yet).
