Question:

College student POLL: What are the employees like at your college??

The employees at my college are HATEFUL. I dread talking to anyone on this certain floor at my college. Every office on that floor is filled with people who have NO SENSE OF HUMOR. Its like someone poured hate juice into their morning coffee. I go in with a smile and leave with a frown. Its horrible.

If you hate your job so much then why do you still come to work??! If I hated my job and the people around me as much as these (mostly) women seem to, I would quit in a heartbeat.

I was wondering if this is just my college or is this a standard practice used by the education system to whip us into shape or something?

  1. I agree with you completely.  Although I'd say 85% of all professors I've had are really cool.  However, the staff at my university ARE ALL RUDE.  I dread talking to them all.  I hate it when I have to call the school's staff on the phone....they are so rude.  They make it obvious they loathe their job.  But you know what?  If I were them, I'd hate sitting at a desk for 8 hours a day too.  But, they should try not to be hateful toward students.  The number one thing I hate doing is calling the financial student aid office.

  2. It's sad.  I've met people like that.  But think about this.  If they hate their jobs, you're right, they should quit.  But the fact that they haven't quit suggests one thing: they can't afford to.  Can you imagine life where you hate going in every day and yet you have to because you can't afford not to?  So, the next time you encounter those hateful people, try to have a little extra compassion for them because of their difficult financial situation.  Times are very tough now.  I know it's difficult to see that when you're a college student, but the job market is very tight, and people are essentially stuck in jobs they don't like.

Anyway, why do you think they hate their job?  Probably because of increasingly stubborn college students.  Perhaps they can't even see your smile amidst all the rudeness they deal with on a daily basis.

  3. Wow, that's so sad!

The employees at my college are amazing. The dining hall staff in particular...they always greet us with a smile. The administrators are, for the most part, incredibly helpful, and very prompt in responding to emails or questions.

The only people who can be irritating are the SA's (Student Advisors...like RA's--they live in the dorms and are in charge of keeping order on the floor.) They sometimes go on power trips, which is obnoxious, but a lot of them are perfectly sweet people who are just doing their jobs.

Maybe the people at your school do hate their jobs...but leaving may not be an option, especially in this job market.

  4. In Financial aid and book stores are usually the two most stressful jobs at a college. They deal with confused college kids all day long!

It does suck that they are rude to you but they catch c**p from people all day. Its tough to be cheery.

I've never met a happy financial aid employee ever.

The rest of the staff is usually really cool, but the more people are rude to you the more rude you tend to be. It stinks but that tends to be "the way it is".
