  1. D1 schools offer athletic scholarships.  D2 and D3 can offer academic or hardship scholarships.  If the volleyball coach wants you, they will try to find you some money.

You may even make a D1 program at 5'5".   There are over 330 D1 schools.  Not every D1 school has setters and Liberos at 6' or better.  There are many D1 programs that have volleyball at the D1 level because of the men's football or basketball programs.

  2. While it is true that most scholarships are given by D1 schools, several D2 schools and even a few D3 schools give some type of scholarship. The best type of scholarship to get, called a "full ride" which means everything (tuition, living expenses, books, other fees, etc.) will all be paid for, are most common at D1 schools. D2 and D3 schools may just offer one or a few of the above costs.

To increase your chances of getting a scholarship, you should be doing one simple thing above all else: PRACTICE. It also helps if you play club because that will increase your chances of being seen by recruiters. But since you're a freshman, you can't even be recruited until 10th grade (which is when I had my first interactions with recruiters)

So keep practicing, and keep your expectations realistic. You probably already know that 5'5 is too small for a D1 setter. D2 is possible, but you're still going to have to work very hard.

Oh yeah one more thing. When you get to be in 10th grade, during your club matches and such, see if you can have somebody take video recordings of your matches. Recruiters will eventually want to see some video of you playing and it will be a useful tool.
