I have five dogs. The youngest is a 1 year old Collie. She barks at almost anything and she does it all day long. She does not listen to us at all. What can we do? It is nerve wrecking for us to hear her bark all day long and at anything. My other dogs are the opposite. My Mom wants to give her away since it is her dog. She is not spayed. My Mom also does not have the money for those training collars. Can something else be done. Thank You.

  1. You cannot muzzle a dog all day.  They must have access to food and water.  The only thing you can do is get training.  You either have to pay someone to give you the tools to curb the barking or pay for a bark collar.  My dog wears a humane bark collar which sprays her with an orange scented spray when she barks.  I do not advocate shock collars.  The collars run about $80-$100.  If you cannot afford that much, maybe your family really shouldn't have 5 dogs.  You have to have the means to care for them whether it be emergency vet treatment, or proper training.  Most animals are turned into shelters for behavior problems, and sadly most are put down.  I would be more concerned about your neighbors complaining about the barking then your family.  If someone is home during the day, you just have to find some tactics to distract the dog or dissuade the dog.  The dog might be bored and needs more structured play and a lot of walks.  A tired dog will be much better behaved.

  2. you can fill a bottle with water ( if you want add a LITTLE bit of vinegar) and spray her and say NO! every time she barks and once she stops tell her good girl. she'll get a hold of it. hope it HELPS!!   :)   by the way the problem isn't going to be solved in one day you have to be patient.  :)

  3. muzzle

  4. She needs to be spayed. This will control her behavior when in heat. She needs to be trained. If you cannot afford to take her to PetSmart classes or similar, get a book and do the work. Results will not happen overnight.

If the dog is not happy in this multi-dog household and is not getting enough attention, perhaps your mom should look for a family without pets so the Collie can be the center of attention.

  5. You guys should have researched the breed better because this is  typical of a collie their a very vocal breed. Praise her when she's quiet & ignore her when she's noisey. And hopefully over some time she'll get that barking is not the way to get attention. Also next time around tell your mother to do her breed research. It ticks me off when people don't researched what their getting. The dog ends up paying for it in the end it's not fair!  >.<

  6. In your extreme situation, I'd recommend a good quality bark collar. People will tell you it's "cruel" but they are the same people who HAVE NEVER even used one. A good dog bark collar will teach the dog not to excessively bark. I don't know about you but getting a bark collar seems a lot better than giving her away.

Also how can you not afford a bark collar but able to support five dogs? Maybe you should find her another owner who can. I'm sorry for being rude but this baffles me!

  7. have you taken her to the vet to see if there is a reason she might be doing this...i know of a dog that was deaf that would bark all the time. so before you do anything take her to the vet first to see what your vet says to do...
