Collin Moran and Bobby Morris remain strong in Round 2 of ASP 4-Star Vans Pier Classic
America’s Collin Moran and his compatriot Bobby Morris advanced through into the third round (Round of 96) of the Association of Surfing Professionals (ASP) 4-Star Vans Pier Classic after claiming top honours in their respective Round 2 (Round of 128) heats that went down at the Huntington Beach Pier in California, America, on Wednesday, March 28.
Hawaii’s Alex Smith and his fellow countryman Jonah Morgan made their way through into the next round of the competition as well after clinching first runner-up position in the 15th and 16th heat respectively.
The local and international surfers found their skills and experience getting tested by the surfing conditions that were prevailing at the Huntington Beach Pier on the opening day of the event. The size of the waves was pretty decent, ranging between two-to-four feet, but the frequency at which these waves were appearing was quite low.
Adjust quite nicely to the conditions at hand, Moran managed to get the better of his compatriot Dylan Kowalski, Australia’s Daniel Karren and Hawaii’s Smith in the 15th heat.
As the four-man battle got underway, Moran got down to business in the opening minutes to lock his first business-wave, earning a 5.33 off it. He soon managed to add an additional 7.10 points to his account to finish with a heat-total of 12.43 points, which held up until the end to carry him off to victory.
Smith made the Round 3 cut as well after securing runner-up position through a heat-total of 10.10 points, which included a 6.67 and 3.43-point wave.
Karren and Kowalski failed to extend their life in the event after finishing with a heat-total of 7.94 and 5.30 points respectively. The lacklustre performance and failure to adjust to the conditions proved costly for them, bringing the competition to a premature end for them.
The final heat of Round 2 saw Morris utilise his local knowledge of the waves to post a 4.50 and an impressive 7.50 on the score-board. The resultant heat-total of 12.00 points proved decisive, sealing the fate of the four-man battle in his favour.
Morgan confirmed his place in the next round as well after scoring a 5.50 and 3.23 off his best-two waves for a heat-total of 8.73 points.
Japan’s Jun Shiiba and America’s Johnny Noris rounded out the bottom-two positions after finishing with a heat-total of 6.67 and 5.63 points respectively.
