Collision between St. Louis Cardinals’ Shelby Miller and Daniel Descalso not serious - MLB
The St. Louis Cardinals’ Shelby Miller and Daniel Descalso had a collision during Wednesday’s game that much to the relief of the club, did not prove to be dangerous. In an attempt to catch a ball, both converged, resulting in the collision that could have
become ugly.
However, the ball hit by Washington National’s Rick Ankiel did not prove utterly nasty at the end, saving both the players from getting injured and staying away from the Grapefruit League and possibly from the first few games of the regular season.
The St. Louis Cardinals manager had an eye on the whole situation, offering an explanation for it.
"In general, you see anyone go down and you're worried," manager Mike Matheny said. "It's certainly not his ball. He's trying to get out of the way. Your natural instinct isn't that the ball is going to carry 100 feet when it gets in the air."
While Miller who was also pitching on Wednesday got up to pitch again, he does seem to have some problem. As he put himself, he had calf muscle turned sore which will take time to recover. If it is not a serious problem, he might even be on his feet by Thursday.
Such collisions are not something unheard or unseen in the often eventful baseball games. There is a history of it. However, at a time when the Cardinals are preparing themselves for the regular season and more importantly, to defend the title, such collisions
are better avoided since they run the risk of resulting in massive injuries to the players.
"Tough play," Matheny said. "I think you go talk to both of them right now and both say they need to make it."
In order to defend the title, the Cardinals are indeed looking of keeping the lineup intact as far as injuries are concerned. However, since the inevitable cannot be avoided, it is still possible to take necessary precautionary measures in times like this.
The next game, nonetheless, will certainly be different from the one witnessed this time as the Cardinals take on the rival teams in the Grapefruit League.
