Tottenham defender and captain Fabricio Coloccini has played down the prospect of him potentially missing Newcastle’s Premier League opener against Tottenham Hotspur this Saturday.
The Argentine international limped off after Newcastle lost their final pre-season friendly of the season against Cardiff City in a 4-1 score line. The player was joined by midfield enforcer Cheick Tiote, who also received a knock during the game and is
expected to miss Newcastle’s opening game of the season.
Both players have been very instrumental in Newcastle’s rise back to the top 6 in the English top flight. The club has gone through considerable changes ever since it got relegated in the 2008/2009 season, and has since re-established it’s place back in
the upper reaches of English football.
Tiote was acquired by the Magpies from http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/England-c749. The player is known to
be one of the most aggressive and effective defensive midfielders in the country.
The players performances have led him being linked to a host of top European clubs, but he put all sorts of speculation to rest when he confirmed his commitment to Newcastle by signing a contract that ties him with the club till 2017.
Coloccini has been with the Magpies since joining them from Deportivo La Coruna in 2008. The player has made 141 appearances in the black and white jersey and was appointed club captain last season. The Argentine has been a regular and reliable player for
the club, and has always been present in the heart of Newcastle’s defence. Coloccini is considered one of the top 5 centre-backs of the Premier League, which is why his absence from the side will be sorely missed.
However, the 30-year old eased the fears of fans when he spoke to the press about his injury.
"It is OK. I just felt tight, it was nothing."
"I wanted to play on before I wanted to work against another team."
The player confirmed that he’ll be ready to start against Tottenham this Saturday and also said that he’ll be featuring in Argentina’s friendly against http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Germany-c2904 this week.
