Colombia takes away gold at II Copa Federacion tournament – Volleyball News

Girls’ Youth volleyball team from Colombia edged out Dominican Republic in the final showdown of II Copa Federacion tournament, which took place in Lima, Peru.
Teams from Colombia and Dominican Republic contested their skills in the final match on Monday, July 2. The former team proved to be better and clinched success in a five-set thriller, 3-2 (25-23, 23-25, 20-25, 25-23, 15-11). The winners of the tournament
Colombian side settled for the gold-ware, whereas Dominican Republic had to be content with the silver medal.
The tournament was organised by Peru National Volleyball Federation and it was the part of its 70th anniversary celebrations.
Maria Martinez played an instrumental role in Colombia’s victory. She topped all the scorers with match-high 25 points, while the duo of Melissa Rangel and Diana Amechea registered 17 and 16 points, respectively.
On the other hand, Pamela Soriano put up a valiant effort for Dominican Republic and contributed 25 points. Likewise, her teammate Ceneida Gonzalez ended with 14 points, the loss.
The final match was a heated competition, which was hotly contested from start to end. Colombia secured the opening set with a narrow gap of two points before the Dominicans levelled the score in second set. Dominican Republic claimed third set of the match,
but Colombia bounced back and captured the next two sets in row that led the team to success in the crucial match.
The home team of Peru could not claw its way to the final showdown, following a loss in the semis of the tournament. However, Peru took on Cuba in the bronze medal match. The home heroines lived up to the expectations of their local fans and held off Cuba
for 3-0 (25-12, 25-22, 25-17) victory in the match.
Cuba's left-handed opposite Yaremis Mendaro created a lot of noise on the court, but failed to lead her team to success. She was credited for match-high 15 points in the three-set affair.
The medal matches were followed by a colourful award ceremony. The Peru Volleyball Federation awarded the outstanding players of the tournament with different accolades and honours.
In overall ranking, Dominican Republic’s Pamela Soriano was named the best scorer of the tournament, Yaremis Mendaro from Cuba settled for the position of best spiker in the competition. Cuban setter Marilin Pages also got the honourable mention at the award
ceremony on account of her consistent performance. Camila Gómez from the gold-medallist squad settled for quite a few awards. She was named the best libero, the best digger, and the best receiver. She was also named the Most Valuable Player of the II Copa
Federacion girls’ tournament. Likewise, Melissa Rangel received the best server’s award. Sandra Santana showed remarkable improvement and got hold of the best server’s position in the campaign.
