  1. There was a fairly high degree of social mobility in the Pre-Independence War British Colonies.  Less so at the top and more so nearer the bottom, but there was an ability to better one's place.  Land was available, the economy was fairly strong, and outside of the "tidewater aristocracy" of the Southern Colonies, there was very little of the sort of caste system or feudalism of Europe.  Immigrantrs could (and certainly did) make something of themselves, and there were even a number of free blacks (in the New England Colonies) who made a go of it and did well.  Paul Revere, as an example, and Ben franklin as another, were both able to improve their stations in life by way of hard work, inovation and good timing.
