It's a Mitsubishi 52'' Rear Projection Tv... My friend gave to me free (so it's a few years old). The picture has alot of blue, especially when it's supposed to be black. Also there are blue curved horizontal lines going across the screen. For some reason the right side is worse than the left. ANY IDEAS?

  1. I agree it's a convergence problem, as mentioned go into Settings in the TV menu and select Convergence if Auto it will do it when you select this.  If not it will ask you to do "Multi-Point Convergence" which will bring up a huge grid on your screen.  You must use the TV remote and using your up and down and left and right buttons to place the "curser" on each grid and adjust the Red and Blue on each point till you get a pure white "grid point"  Think of the picture as split up into say 72 different puzzle pieces and when you adjust each piece it fixes that one piece of the puzzle or screen.  You want all lines to be pure white and by looking at the grid if you see either blue or red on the side of the white line, you want to move the right, left, up or down button so that the blue or red line gets back on track with it's corresponding white line grid.

It sounds complicated but you will get it after a few seconds of playing around with it.  Convergence should be done after the TV has been on for at least 30 minutes and should be done at least once a year (twice would be better at minimum)  You see the problem with RPTV is they use three color lenses and as you watch TV, the lenses over time get out of alignemnt and need to be readjusted to get a clear sharp picture.

I adjusted a TV once that had never been converged in ten years and it took me over two hours to get all 72 points back on track, once done you will notice a way sharper picture and the colors won't be off kilter.

It takes time, but once you get it, you'll get it.  I converge mine once a month and it takes me about 2-3 minutes to do the whole screen because I keep up to date on my 58" Pioneer RPTV.

  2. Specialist... HAH!!!!!!!!!!, your problem is that your convergence is out of whack on your TV.

It's okay, though. Grab your remote, go to your "Setup" menu, and choose "convergence". If there is an "Auto convergence" option, do that and it should fix itself.

What happens is that the red, blue and green projection guns (lamps) get knocked out of whack if the TV is moved. Whenever you see red, blue or green lines, it means that the projection guns are not aligned. To realign them, you COULD do it manually, but I wouldn't suggest it unless you know what you're doing. Mitsubishi has a Magic Convergence, or Auto Convergence, or Auto Focus or something under those lines in the setup menu.

Auto convergence should fix that right up for you, and will take less than a minute.

  3. Colour patches are common when any type of television is ageing. This indicates that the picture tube is becoming hazy.

This mainly occurs due to wear and tear and passage of time.

It signifies that its time to replace your television set. If you continue to delay, the image appearing on theT.V.  will get distorted.  Do not make the mistake of giving your  T.V. to a mechanic or service centre as it clears indicates " picture tube haziness" , you will  get cheated by them. So inorder to be on the safe side please go in for a new purchase .
