Hi, I'm a 16 year old female and 3 months ago I discovered that I'm colour-blind. My dad is not colour blind; how is it that he's my father and I'm colour blind and he's not. I'm the only one in my family that is colour blind and they don't believe that I am, however, my science teacher and my math teacher who is colour blind confirmed it! So, will someone explain to be the biology behind this?

  1. I believe that the color-blindness trait is carried by the mother (or grandmother or great grandmother). I am color-blind, my father was color-blind and his mother was color-blind.

  2. its not common, but it does happen...about 2% of the world's women are colour blind opposed to 12% males.

surprisingly enough, your mother carries a silent colour blind gene that doesnt effect her, but has surfaced from her biological tree...tracing back there would be a good idea.

usually this silent gene only affects males...but obviously you are a prime eg. that there are always exceptions.
