the color code for a patch cable is as follows ( google it if u must )

    1 orange white

    2 orange

    3 green white

    4 blue

    5 blue white

    6 green

    7 brown white

    8 brown

    ON BOTH ENDS

    CROSS OVER CABLE  FIRST END

    1 orange white

    2 orange

    3 green white

    4 blue

    5 blue white

    6 green

    7 brown white

    8 brown

    2ND END

    1 GREEN WHITE

    2 GREEN

    3 ORANGE WHITE

    4 BLUE

    5 BLUE WHITE

    6 ORANGE

    7 BROWN WHITE

    8 BROWN

A cross over cable will allow the transmission of data from one pc to another with out the use of a hub / or router

however you can not just plug in a cross over cable and think it will work , because it will not . the tcpip settings on each pc's nic card will have to be set to a private IP scheme so each pc is able to communicate . and both then will need to be set in the same workgroup

  2. Technically if both sides match exactly in either order the cable will work. The ends should not be different unless you are making a crossover cable.

As far as what color codes are "right" you can look at the following diagram. Like i said if they match, it should work but the following is considered a standard:

  3. There are 2 standard color codes.  However you must properly look at the cable ends.

The A standard for straight cable is

    pin      color

    1    green white

    2    green

    3    orange white

    4    blue

    5    blue white

    6    orange

    7    brown white

    8    brown

You see the same on both ends

The A standard for a cross cable is

    pin    end 1              end 2

    1       green white    orange white

    2       green              orange

    3       orange white  green white

    4       blue                  blue

    5       blue white        blue white

    6       orange             green

    7       brown white     brown white

    8       brown               brown

The B standard differs from A in that you interchange the orange white for green white and orange for green.

The B standard is most common.

  4. Left to right as you are looking down onto the end of the cable:

    1st: Whit/Green

    2nd: Green

    3rd: White/Orange

    4th: Blue

    5th: White/Blue

    6th: Orange

    7th: White/Brown

    8th: Brown

Ensure the locking clip is on the underside when fitting into plug, alway recheck prior to crimping.
