Color scheme for an evening cocktail party next week?

Right now I have white, light purple, and yellow, but I think it's too daytime.

What is a better color scheme? I was thinking perhaps silver, black, and red.

I have told my guests to dress semi-formally.

I think silver, black and red look too "wintery" ... The light purple, yellow & white are perfect for warm weather - and you can add some dark purple if you want ....  Those are sort of the colors of a summer sunset!

Id go with the classic black and white.  It may seem a little chiche but it is always a crowd pleaser.  

But if you want something more originial then try a light blue or turqouise with the black.

Red and black if you are thinking s**y, but its its to accomadate a group, and its in the evening why not try something more nuetral and summery.......such as silver or gray and burnt orange?  Good luck
