Colorado Avalanche beat Calgary Flames in a high scoring affair
The Colorado Avalanche scored three goals in the third period to come back and get a 6-5 win over the Calgary Flames on Thursday 28 October in Calgary.
How it happened
The result might have been different had Flames head coach Brent Sutter decided to start Miikka Kiprusoff in goal instead of backup Henrik Karlsson who let in six goals on 36 shots.
Avalanche goalie Peter Budaj didn't fare much better conceding five goals on just 19 shots. That seems to be par for the course for the Avalanche, however, as they have had struggled to keep pucks out of their own net and are averaging almost four goals
against per game – worst in the NHL.
Chris Stewart led the way for the Avalanche scoring a hat trick, including two goals in the second period. Stewart now has eight goals on the year tying him with Steven Stamkos for second most in the NHL.
The Flames finally got some scoring from players other than Rene Bourque who was held to just a single assist. Olli Jokinen finally got his first of the season near the end of the second period which gave the Flames a 4-3 lead going into the third.
Colorado stole the lead back in the third period with goals from Brandon Yip and T.J. Galiardi before Alex Tanguay tied the game up at five with his fourth of the year.
Daniel Winnik potted the winner with his fourth of the year with just 2:20 remaining.
What they're saying
Before the game, the Flames honored Craig Conroy who was playing in his 1000th game.
"All the fun stuff before was awesome," Conroy said about the ceremony. "I took that all in. I would have loved to have gotten the win tonight, but it just didn't happen, so we have to regroup and win the next one."
Winnik was happy with his team's performance and the way they managed to come back, and was especially happy with the way he was able to make an important contribution. "Especially against these guys, it's good to get a win," Winnik said. "It's always nice
to get a goal, but it's especially nice to get the game winner."
The Flames (6-4-0) continue their six game home stand when they host the Washington Capitals (6-4-0) on Saturday 30 October.
The Avalanche (5-4-1) snapped their three-game losing skid and next take on the Columbus Blue Jackets (6-3-0) on Saturday in Denver.
