Colorado Avalanche bounces back with 5-2 over Edmonton Oilers -NHL Match Update
Edmonton was rolling high, but as they faced another young team in Colorado, the Oilers fell as the Avalanche could not stop scoring and bounced back after two straight losses, 5-2, on Saturday night, November 26, 2011, at the Pepsi Center in Denver, Colorado,
United States.
Only having won two since the month of November kicked off in the 2011-2012 National Hockey League (NHL) regular season, Colorado was in a real slump by losing consecutive games after every one win.
"It was a real important win for our club," Avalanche coach Joe Sacco said. "It's going to hopefully boost our confidence right now. Being able to score five, especially at home … it was a good period. We showed some resiliency in our game. That was good
to see."
Ladislav Smid scored his first of the season and gave Edmonton an early lead when he potted the contests first at the 2:59 mark of the opening period, but it was closely followed by Colorado’s, Jay McClement, with his third nearly two minutes later to level
the match.
Edmonton’s veteran forward, Ryan Jones, made the tie breaker in the opening two minutes of the second period but the third period was all Colorado as the Avalanche dominated by potting four straight.
"I think it went really good," Colorado’s Stefan Elliot said. "It is nice to get that win for sure. I was pretty anxious coming in here, but it is definitely nice to get this first (game) under my belt. Hopefully, there is a lot more to come in my career."
Shane O'Brien scored his first of the season to kick off the third period scoring during a second Edmonton penalty while Stefan Elliott fired off his career first and Jan Hejda came back for another at the 16:19 mark and Paul Stastny made Colorado’s fourth
and last with less than two minutes to go.
Colorado has the next against the Dallas Stars at home on Monday, while the Oilers will also be returning home for a matchup against the Nashville Predators on the same day.
It will certainly be exciting to see how these teams continue to play in their upcoming matchups as the season progresses.
