Colorado Avalanche keep Calgary Flames below Playoff line 2-1 -NHL Update
Calgary had the chance to tie Los Angeles Kings for the last playoff spot in the Western Conference as they needed two points to move up but Colorado Avalanche kept Flames below the postseason line with a 2-1 victory, Tuesday night, March 20, 2012, at the
Pepsi Center in Denver, Colorado.
The Flames have now lost three matches in a row, which were not only contest losses but missed opportunities to grab a playoff spot with six points out the window. With 82 points, Calgary still has eight games remaining and more than enough time to make
up for the losses, which they will hopefully manage to do.
Avalanche on the other hand is heating up with the playoffs right around the corner. Colorado is now 5-1 in their last six and could be overtaking some top ranked teams as they continue to win.
Calgary was at least able to take the match into overtime and gain that one point.
"We knew the importance of the game," said Flames captain, Jarome Iginla. "It was a good game. Kipper is playing great. We have had one goal (in each of the past three games) and you are not going to win many of those. We had good chances tonight, but they
are just not going in."
Matt Stajan gave Calgary the early lead with his eighth of the 2011-2012 National Hockey League (NHL) regular season 1:47 into the first followed by an equaliser from Paul Stastny of Colorado.
Both teams failed to add anymore in the remaining 40 minutes of regulation and it was David Jones who got the game-winner in overtime with 1:09 remaining till a shootout would come into play to decide the match.
Calgary and Colorado met five times this season and surprisingly, this was the Avalanche’s first win out of them, certainly a moment to be proud of.
"It was about time. We needed to get a goal like that to beat them," Jones said.
Colorado Avalanche have the next in Phoenix against Coyotes on Thursday while has to win their next against Minnesota Wild on the same day in order to keep their playoff hopes alive.
