Colorado Avalanche loses 5-1 to the Edmonton Oilers - NHL Weekend Roundup
The second last game of Saturday was hosted by the Colorado Avalanche as they played host to the Edmonton Oilers.
Avalanche are 14th while Oilers are 15th in the Western Conference, so a win for either of the teams would have boosted their confidence as they are most certainly out of contention for a play-off spot.
The game began with the Avalanche matching the Oilers early on but the away side had other things in mind. They came up with some spending ice hockey that saw them leading 4-1 at the end of the second period.
The Oilers scored once again during the final 20 minutes of play to win the game 5-1 in the end.
Sam Gagner of the Oilers was named the star of the game as he scored two goals and came up with two assists.
The Oilers made a great start to the game as they were on fire right from the word go. Though they made some early attacks but they couldn’t find the back of the net.
However, it didn’t take too long as they finally scored in the fifth minute through Sam Gagner from a quick fired shot during power play that found the back of the net.
The Oilers continued to pile pressure on the opposing team and successfully scored in the 10th minute once again through Ryan Jones during power play from a brilliant backhand shot.
The period saw the Avalanche coming up with a few shots on target but they couldn’t find the back of the net.
The period ended with the Oilers leading 2-0. During the course of the period, the Oilers made 14 shots on goal while the Avalanche made just five.
The second period started off with the Oilers scoring in the very first minute through Shawn Horcoff from a superb flick shot to extend their lead. The Avalanche was the team that was attacking regularly but the Oilers scored the next goal in the 9th
minute through Alexandre Giroux from a decent tip in shot.
The Avalanche also managed to open their account with a brilliant goal in the 16th minute scored by Ryan O’Reilly from a well placed shot.
The period ended with the Oilers leading 4-1 as the period ended. During the course of the period, the Oilers made 8 shots on goal while the Avalanche made 20 shots on goal.
The Oilers made a great start once again that saw them scoring once again in the opening minute through Andrew Cogliano from a good shot.
The period and the game ended with no further goals as the Oilers won the game 5-1.
During the course of the final period the Oilers made 9 shots on goal while the Avalanche made 8 shots on goal.
