Colorado Avalanche prospect Tyson Barrie finally ready to make it onto Roster –NHL offseason Update
Tyson Barrie, a former 64th overall draft pick during round-three of the 2009 National Hockey League (NHL) Entry Draft by Colorado Avalanche has had enough of spending time in the minor leagues and has his eye on making the roster this time around
when the training camp begins in mid-September.
Unlike last year when the training camp began, not only was Barrie’s game on a down low, he also sustained a hamstring injury which disallowed him from performing at his level best and impressing the management, but for him, this year is certainly different.
"I want to make the team", said Barrie. "I feel this is the first year where I have a legitimate shot to make the team, and that's really exciting for me. My goal is to go in and play like I can and show these guys that I deserve to be there".
Barrie was also named the runner up for the Bill Hunter Memorial Trophy as the Western Hockey League’s (WHL) top performing defenseman with Kelowna Rockets team. Coincidently, he followed fellow Colorado Avalanche prospect, Stefan Elliott, who was named
the winner.
Due to his impressive 58 point (11 goals, 47 assists) performance in 54 games last season, the Victoria, British Columbia, Canada native, was also selected to play for Team Canada in the World Junior Championships.
"It was a great year for me", said Barrie. "I got a chance to play in the world juniors, which was kind of a once-in-a-lifetime experience, and it was cool to be the captain of the Rockets, a great honor. We had a good team with a great group of guys. It
was a fun year”.
According to Tyson Barrie, his defensive game altogether has drastically improved over the year from where it stood before. With his newly found skills and blast of confidence, Barrie could be the next defensive sensation for Colorado Avalanche, a struggling
Eastern Conference team which is determined to make a huge change when the new season starts.
Training camp is set to begin on September 16, for the rookies, who will give it their best for a signing opportunity.
