Colorado Avalanche re-sign Cody McLeod to $3.45 million, three-year contract -NHL Update
Colorado Avalanche decided to award their physical forward, Cody McLeod, with a long-term contract on Monday, June 4, 2012, for his performance in the past 2011-2012 National Hockey League (NHL) regular season.
Both stakeholders signed a three-year deal, worth a reported $3.45 million. The 27-year-old forward received a slight bump up from his previous deal of three-years worth $3.1 million.
Colorado Avalanche general manager, Cody McLeod, was the one to make the announcement.
"We are pleased to announce that we've come to terms with Cody," Avalanche GM, Greg Sherman, said. "He will remain with the Avalanche organization, where he has been his entire career."
For many hockey analysts, Cody McLeod can be termed to be one of the most underused players as he definitely has the capacity to be a 10-plus goal scorer each season but is not played accordingly.
He had a career high with Colorado back in 2008-2009 as he potted 20 points (15 goals, 5 assists) in 79 games played, but this time around, McLeod only put up 11 points (6 goals, 5 assists) in total for 75 games.
McLeod was signed by Colorado as an undrafted free agent back in July of 2006 and has been a part of the Avalanche franchise ever since.
In a total of 348 career games played up until now, McLeod holds a record of 66 points (37 goals, 29 assists).
Colorado Avalanche has one of the youngest line-ups in the entire league and keeping players like Cody McLeod is seen as a welcomed step since he provides immense depth on the offensive squad when physicality is needed in a game.
He put up a team high of 164 minutes in penalty time and continues to do so for the past five straight seasons, which makes him the first player in team history to do so.
Cody McLeod should be seen in a bigger role next season as Colorado Avalanche will definitely be looking to utilise players like him much more. They need to get back into playoff form and players like Cody McLeod playing top-notch hockey is the only way
to do so.
