Colorado Avalanche re-sign Jamie McGinn with two-year, $3.5 million deal -NHL Free Agency Update
It looks like Jamie McGinn worked his magic and locked on a solid deal with Colorado Avalanche after a test phase last National Hockey League (NHL) regular season.
The 23-year-old was signed on to two-year deal reported by the Denver Post, which was also learned to be worth a cool $3.5 million in salary. It comes as a major boost for the player after the left winger definitely did impress last season.
In 2011-2012, McGinn had, what many say to be, his last chance to stay permanently in the major league after disappointing with the San Jose Sharks. He was brought on board by Colorado Avalanche during a late season trade after playing 61 games.
Last season was a breakthrough one for the player, who had never had more than $1 million in annual salary, but will be making a total of $3.5 million in the next two seasons.
In just 17 games with Colorado, McGinn outperformed his competition by registered 13 points (8 goals, 5 assists) and 11 minutes in penalty time.
“Jamie made an immediate impact from the time he joined our organization,” Avalanche general manager Greg Sherman said in a statement. “We look forward to Jamie building upon last season’s performance and are pleased to have agreed to contract terms.”
McGinn made the announcement via social media website Twitter.
"Very excited to be back with the @Avalanche for the next two years!" McGinn said via his account.
His last salary was a total of $680,000 in the NHL, making him a restricted free agent by the end of it all. In total, McGinn put up 37 points last season (20 goals, 17 assists) with San Jose Sharks and Colorado Avalanche.
Since being drafted by the San Jose Sharks, as the 36th overall, during round-two of the 2006 NHL Entry Draft, last season can very easily be labelled as a breakthrough one for him in every sense of the word.
In 221 career games played, the young forward has 62 points (35 goals, 27 assists) and 110 minutes in penalty time.
So far, McGinn does not have valuable experience in the playoffs but just might be the factor in getting Colorado Avalanche past that line next season.
