Colorado Avalanche re-sign defenseman Matt Hunwick to two-year, $3.2 million contract -NHL Update
Colorado Avalanche continued their offseason team rebuilding by re-signing defenseman, Matt Hunwick, to a two-year contract on Thursday, June 7, 2012.
The financial terms and conditions of the deal were not officially disclosed by the National Hockey League (NHL) franchise but it is believed to be worth a cool $3.2 million, keeping him secured on the club through the 2013-2014 regular season.
Colorado general manager, Greg Sherman, was the one to make the announcement through a statement released by the club.
"Matt provides depth to our defence," Avalanche GM Greg Sherman said in a statement. "He played an important role for our team late last season and we are excited to have him under contract."
Picked up as the 224th overall player during round-seven of the 2004 NHL Entry Draft by Boston Bruins, Hunwick will be entering his sixth consecutive season in the North American major league later on in October.
The 27-year-old played nearly four seasons with Boston Bruins before being traded to Colorado Avalanche early on in the 2010-2011 regular season. Hunwick was sent by Boston Bruins to Colorado Avalanche in exchange for defensive prospect, Colby Cohen.
Hunwick had a miserable start to the 2011-2012 season but became an essential part of the Avalanche team during the final few games as he played a total of 33 and put up six points (3 goals, 3 assists).
In total, Matt Hunwick has played 248 games and has a record of 61 points (16 goals, 45 assists)  along with 100 minutes in penalty time, something he wishes on getting up to par again after a sluggish year.
Hunwick’s previous contract was a one-year deal worth $1.55 million, which would have made him an unrestricted free agent by the start of July later on this year, but showing a rattling performance near the end, Colorado has kept him on for two more with
a $1.6 million annual salary.
The Warren, Missouri native, will be a major factor in Colorado Avalanche’s run for making the playoffs next season as they missed out this past season by ending 11th in the Western Conference.
