Colorado Avalanche sneak past the Edmonton Oilers 4-3 after shootout
Milan Hejduk scored the only goal in the shootout to give his team a 4-3 win over the Edmonton Oilers on Thursday night. This was Colorado’s first win in their last four games. The Oilers managed to tie the game in the final period, but the Avalanche held
their nerve in the shootout to claim the win.
Despite being the away side, the Colorado Avalanche dominated the first period. They looked confident going forward in attack and were good with their passing as well. The visitors took the lead after scoring a goal in the fourth minute through TJ Galiardi.
Colorado then continued to pile the pressure onto the Oilers. They were rewarded with a goal in the 13th minute, which allowed them to double their lead. Paul Stastny scored the goal through a brilliantly placed flick shot. The Avalanche wrapped
up a dominant performance with the final goal of the period from Tomas Fleischmann in the 15th minute. The period ended with Colorado Avalanche leading 3-0. Colorado made 11 goal attempts, while Edmonton Oilers made 10 goal attempts during the period.
The Oilers began the second period with a lot more attacking intent and confidence. However, it was Edmonton who started the stronger of the two sides in the period. The home defence though was up to the task, and prevented the hosts from falling further
behind. After soaking up some initial pressure, the Oilers hit back in the 10th minute through Taylor Hall to reduce the deficit. They continued to attack for the remainder of the period, but no more goals were scored. The 20 minutes ended with
Colorado leading 3-1. During the period the Colorado Avalanche made six goal attempts, while the Edmonton Oilers had 10 goal attempts.
Both teams were evenly matched in the final period, but Edmonton Oilers were the more clinical side as they scored twice in the period to take the match into over time. Edmonton scored through Ales Hemsky in the second minute to cut the lead to just one
goal. Andrew Cogliano then scored the equalizing goal for the Oilers in the fifth minute from a powerful strike. The score at the end of regulation time was 3-3 and no goals were scored during overtime. However, Milan Hejduk’s goal during shootout won Colorado
Avalanche the match 4-3.
