Colorado Avalanche stays hot with third straight over St. Louis Blues 3-2 -NHL Update
Facing a top level team of their Western Conference, the Colorado Avalanche were not afraid to stare St. Louis Blues straight in the eyes in their Wednesday night matchup, on December 21, 2011, at the Pepsi Center in Denver, Colorado, United States.
The Avalanche stayed hot and powerful with their third straight victory in the 2011-2012 National Hockey League (NHL) regular season over the St. Louis Blues, 3-2, as Colorado denied the team a second period comeback and kept them out of their defensive
end in the final 20 minutes of regulation.
Colorado had only one attempt in the third period while St. Louis had 11 but Jean-Sebastien Giguere was too quick for them in the net by blocking all 11 and 37 of 39 throughout the 60-minute contest.
St. Louis goalie Brian Elliot, on the other hand, fell short on three shots facing 22 in total.
The Avalanche bumped up to the 10th number position in the Western Conference with 35 points now while the St. Louis Blues stands still at the sixth place spot with 42 points.
Colorado dominated the opening period as Paul Stastny scored his 11th of the regular season in the first four minutes of game play followed by an extension shot by Cody McLeod for his second less than two minutes later.
The home team also managed to kill off three straight penalties which could have meant doom for them in the initial period right of the bat.
St. Louis came back equally as strong with two straight goals by Blues captain, David Backes, for his 11th as well followed by Chris Stewart nearly midway through the contest to equalise the match, which would be the teams’ last of the night.
Jay McClement made the deciding shot that gave the match for Colorado with less than six minutes to go in the second period, giving them a lead entering the final 20 minutes of game time, which they were luckily able to maintain till the end.
St. Louis is hoping to bounce back against the Phoenix Coyotes on Friday while the Avalanche are eyeing a fourth straight win at home against Tampa Bay Lightning on the same day.
