Colorado Avalanche surprise New Jersey Devils with huge 6-1 win - NHL Update
Colorado was not able to score big numbers ever since their five-game winning streak was snapped by the Chicago Blackhawks earlier as the 2011-2012 National Hockey League (NHL) regular season kicked off, but the Avalanche showed that they had not died down
and thrashed the New Jersey Devils with a 6-1 win, on Wednesday night, November 30, 2011, at the Pepsi Center in Denver, Colorado, United States.
Starting off the opening period with three straight goals by Milan Hejduk, T.J. Galiardi on a breakaway opportunity and Jan Hejda to close it off, certainly gave Colorado the boost they needed to overtake the match.
"We had the start we hoped for, something we haven't had for a while," Colorado’s veteran forward, Milan Hejduk said. "It was a great team effort. Hopefully we can duplicate this effort and put a few wins together. The pucks went in for some reason. We've
had games where we had tons of shots and scoring chances when they didn't go in. They did tonight, finally."
With tensions mounting high as New Jersey got two straight, Ryan O'Byrne and David Clarkson exchanged fists a few seconds after Galiardi’s first of the night and were awarded a five-minute major penalty each.
Ilya Kovalchuk finally got the Devils on the scoreboard with his fifth of the season a little over midway through which gave the impression of snapping their scoring streak but Ryan O'Reilly built the momentum again followed by Jay McClement shorthanded
and Stefan Elliott to insure the match with less than three minutes remaining.
Colorado head coach, Joe Sacco, just hopes that it is something that his team will continue building on instead of breaking the momentum with another loss.
"It's something to build on," Sacco said. "Certainly it's something we can take with us moving into our next game (Friday against St. Louis). We also gave up one goal and allowed (19) shots against.
Colorado have two more at home against the St. Louis Blues on Friday and Detroit Red Wings on Sunday while the New Jersey Devils will be looking to snap their two-game losing streak against the Minnesota Wild in the next two days.
