Colorado Avalanche takes down Minnesota Wild in huge 7-1 win -NHL Update
Colorado seems to keep on getting better each and every day that goes by, this time as the Avalanche took down Minnesota Wild, 7-1, Tuesday night, March 6, 2012, at the Pepsi Center in Denver, Colorado, United States.
Minnesota might have been one of those teams that cannot seem to get their act together with a number of injuries affecting the team but Colorado was just too good for them to handle.
Like a number of other players that have been allowing the Avalanche to climb back up in the Western Conference rankings, goaltender Semyon Varlamov, is also playing a major role in Colorado’s recent domination.
Varlamov blocked 21 of 22 shots for a near shutout while his counterparts in the Minnesota net had to be changed nearly halfway through as Colorado’s offensive power kept attacking.
"That is my job, to stop the pucks and sometimes make the huge saves and help the guys win every night," Varlamov said. "The guys played well in front of me, offensively and defensively. We had lots of goals. We played well and we just need to continue to
work."
On a two-game winning streak now, Colorado is only a game away from overtaking a playoff spot with 74 points.
"We'll see how we play the next few games," Varlamov added. "Especially this time of the season, you have to win every game if you want to play in the playoffs."
Colorado is now tied with eighth place San Jose Sharks and ninth place Los Angeles Kings with 74 points, making the upcoming games of these three teams extremely crucial as they play to secure a playoff spot.
Jay McClement took the first goal of the night with his 10th of the 2011-2012 National Hockey League (NHL) regular season 3:05 into the opening period.
Avalanche caught fire in the second as Jamie McGinn triggered the shooting spree on a power play midway through followed by Jan Hejda, Mark Olver and Ryan O’Reilly in the next six minutes.
Devin Setoguchi gave Minnesota their first of the night 4:34 into the third but two more from David Jones and Cody McLeod just killed any momentum the Wild might have had.
Colorado dominated Minnesota for the second straight matchup and will now be heading to Nashville to face-off against Predators on Thursday.
Wild on the other hand, have the next against Phoenix Coyotes on the same day.
