Colorado Avalanche up for clearing another obstacle as they host Anaheim Ducks – NHL Preview
Colorado Avalanche are so near to securing a spot in the comfort zone of National Hockey League (NHL) Western Conference that a couple of more victories will relieve them off all the worries, but they should also be aware of the fact that a couple of otherwise
results can even ruin their playoff hopes.
While carrying the home-ice advantage, Avalanche are going to host the surging Anaheim Ducks on Monday, February 27, 2012, at Pepsi Center, Denver, Colorado.
Let’s have a look at both these teams.
Avalanche
Trailing the eighth ranked Dallas Stars by only two points, Avalanche are ranked at 10th spot in the Western Conference with 68 points after 63 games.
At present, they are on a three-game winning streak with the recent victories coming against Los Angeles Kings (4-1), Columbus Blue Jackets (5-0) and the most prominent against Detroit Red Wings (4-3).
Red Wings, who have set up a record of winning 23 straight games on home ice, were lousy on the rink against Avalanche, who scored two goals in the first period and one in the second without even conceding any.
Red Wings, however, hit back in the final to score three goals, but Avalanche also managed a goal in the period and got the victory.
Colorado’s forward, Steve Downie, said after the game:
"We knew this win was going to be tough. It's hard to win in this League on back-to-backs, especially in this building, but we came out hard and withstood their pressure. We knew they were going to come out [hard] in the third. They're a great home team,
but we got through it."
Ducks
The Ducks are slightly behind in the Western Conference and if they are unable to record an impressive winning run, they could seriously hurt their playoff chances.
Presently on a two-game winning run, Ducks are placed at 13th spot in the Western Conference with 64 points after 62 games and the recent victories came against Carolina Hurricanes (3-2 after shootout) and Chicago Blackhawks (3-1).
Blackhawks scored the first goal of the game, but Ducks dominated the rink after that and scored a goal each in every period to secure the win.
Ducks’ right wing, Teemu Selanne, said of the victory:
“When you go through some tough times like we did in the first half, you really believe what’s happening here. When it turns around, it has been unbelievable. Fun. That's why we all play. You try to keep pushing and enjoy this.”
Predictions
Avalanche will win.
The sum of goals scored by both the teams will stay under six.
If Ducks win, the winning margin will be less than two.
