Colorado Avalanche wins 4-3 against St. Louis Blues in a tough match
A middle table clash of Monday saw Colorado Avalanche play host to St. Louis Blues at the Pepsi Centre. This was the 731st game of the 2010 Compuware NHL Premiere Series and one of the eagerly awaited matches of the season, keeping in mind the
rivalry of the two teams which saw around 13,000 fans attending the game.
The match was more like a see-saw where no goals were scored in the first period, two for each team in the second and the final period was lined up to be a very tough one.
It surely was very tough with Colorado Avalanche scoring twice to win the match 4-3 in the end. Brandon Yip, winger of Colorado Avalanche was named the star selection of the match for his two goals.
St. Louis Blues attacked right from the word go and worked to some extent as Colorado Avalanche was on the back foot during the first half of the period. Its quick and pin point passing didn’t let the home team settle.
However, Colorado Avalanche countered this with attacks too taking a few risks. The risks were worth taking as St. Louis Blues started to go on the pace.
After a few minutes, it was Colorado Avalanche who controlled the pace of the game and attacked. Regular goal attempts coupled with some excellent combination was on display from Colorado.
The period didn’t see any goals despite dozens of chances for both teams.
The period saw Colorado Avalanche making 15 goal attempts during the period while St. Louis Blues could manage only 7 goal attempts.
Colorado Avalanche continued to dominate the proceedings as the second period started. With the strong offence and some brilliant plays, Colorado Avalanche scored in the second minute to get into the lead.
The goal was scored through a quick fired shot by Brandon Yip which caught the goalie by surprise.
Colorado Avalanche continued to attack when suddenly St. Louis Blue changed its game play and started to attack from the wings. This proved to be very effective as St. Louis Blues immediately started to come across scoring chances.
It took Blues time but the away side levelled the scores with a goal in the 8th minute scored by Jay McClement.
After levelling the scores, St. Louis Blues didn’t back out and continued to attack looking to score further goals.
This is exactly what it did, scoring through Eric Brewer in the 14th minute to get into the lead. However, as it attacked open spaces were left at the back.
Seeing the opportunity, Colorado Avalanche caught Blues on a counter attack in the 18th minute and scored through Brandon Yip from a wrap around shot to level the scores once again.
The period ended with no further goals and the scores level on 2-2.
During the period, Colorado Avalanche made 9 goal attempts while St. Louis Blues made 7 goal attempts.
The final 20 minutes of play was evenly matched by the two sides as each team made 8 goal attempts during the period. However, Colorado Avalanche was the more productive side, scoring two goals in quick succession in the 11th and 12th
minute, respectively, to take a two-goal lead.
The first goal was scored by Kevin Shattenkirk while the second was scored Ryan Stoa.
St. Louis Blues managed to pull one back in the 19th minute through David Backes but the match ended with Colorado Avalanche winning by 4-3 in the end.
