Colorado Buffaloes coach Dan Hawkins safe, for now
According to a recent report made by The Denver Post, Dan Hawkins, the head football coach for the University of Colorado, will retain his position through (at least) the end of the year.
The decision, which has been made by the Buffaloes’ athletic director Mike Bohn, was partially influenced by Cody Hawkins, the coach’s son and Colorado’s quarterback. As of now, Cody remains the only quarterback under scholarship available for his father’s
squad, as the team’s depth chart has been decimated by injuries at the play-calling position this season.
The judgement seems to be the only decent news for coach Hawkins, as the program has floundered during his five-year tenure at the school. After starting the season with a promising 3-1 record, the Buffaloes are in the midst of a five-game losing streak, and
currently sit at 3-6. Furthermore, all five of those consecutive losses have come at the hands of in-conference rivals, as the Buffs also remain win-less in the Big 12.
Saturday’s 52-45 loss at the hands of the lowly Kansas Jayhawks cements yet another lacklustre campaign for Colorado, who cannot finish better than .500 this season, and has gone 19-39 in Hawkins’ five years at the helm.
“It goes without saying that this game was extremely disappointing on many levels and obviously these developments do not meet our expectations,” Bohn said in a statement released after Saturday’s devastating loss. “That’s not to disparage Kansas’ accomplishments
in any way. While we share many of the same frustrations and serious disappointment as our fans, I have confidence in this group of seniors to represent this team and the university with both pride and a competitive spirit the rest of the season.”
According to the report, Bohn is expected to meet with Hawkins at some point this week to discuss the head coach’s future. However, the athletic director remains hesitant to relieve Hawkins of his duties under the pretence that the coach’s firing would only
lead to a further backlash from players and fans alike.
