Colorado Buffaloes will not have money to hire high profile head coach
University of Colorado athletic director Mike Bohn has claimed that the school will not have enough money to hire a high profile coach, as the university still owes former head coach Dan Hawkins $2 million in salary.
Bohn continued, explaining that the school has several financial constraints and having to pay Hawkins will keep them from pursuing some of the more experienced candidates in the position.
"It’s not really a level playing field of the haves in the Big 12 or the haves in the Pac-12," Bohn said at a news conference. "We’re not a $4 million institution. Would I like to believe we could get there someday? Sure...If we emerge from not being dead
last in the Pac-12 Conference as far as number of donors and amount of money raised, that’s a challenge for us."
Bohn made the decision to fire Hawkins only three days after the school suffered one of its most embarrassing losses of the season against the Kansas Jayhawks, and only one day after Bohn expressed confidence in the abilities of his head coach.
The most obvious candidate to fill the position is former head coach Bill McCartney, who has said that he is interested in returning to Colorado as head coach. McCartney led the Buffaloes to their 1990 national title, but is now 70 years old and has not
been involved in coaching since 1994.
The Buffaloes have had a terrible 2010 season and will be interested in trying to turn their program around in time for next year when they join the new Pac-12 Conference. Colorado is currently last in the Big 12 North Division, sitting at 3-6 with a 0-5
record against conference opponents.
The Buffaloes will next be in action against the Iowa State Cyclones on Saturday, 13 November.
