Colorado Rockies' starting pitcher Juan Nicasio aiming high ahead of spring training
Colorado Rockies starting pitcher Juan Nicasio is aiming high ahead of next Major League training sessions despite his critical broken neck surgery. Sources are speculating in the media that not only Nicasio is recovering very quickly but he is also preparing hard for the 2012 training camps.
Rolando Fernandez, who is the Rockies' director of Latin America operations, recently spoke in the media for Nicasio. “He's been throwing to hitters with an L screen (that provides protection). He's doing good.”
Fernandez added that Nicasio is currently in his native country, Dominican Republic and has started training while throwing to hitters at full energy. Fernandez further stated that Nicasio will be in good shape before the start of the next season.
Last year, Nicasio was hit severely in the head by a line-drive and later a reverse hit on his head at the mound caused him with to break his C1 vertebra.
However, though he had a surgery to insert a permanent metal plate in his neck but doctors told him that he might need to rest for almost 10 months to recover fully.
Nicasio, who played his first Major League season with Colorado’s baseball team, went with 4.14 ERA along with 4-4 win-loss record, 58 strike-outs and 1.27 WHIP and received appreciation from many experts.
Before his neck injury in August, Nicasio was going smoothly towards excellence but that particular neck surgery restricted him to play only 13 Major League games.
Experts believe with all these hitches happened to Nicasio last season caused his game to suffer but as the next season is approaching fast, the Rockies entire roster is showing great optimism on his game and giving him more confidence to make a good comeback.
On the other hand, the Rockies are also preparing to rotate the starting line-up for next season in order to get more productive results. Having Jhoulys Chacin along with Jason Hammel, Juan Nicasio, Alex White, Drew Pomeranz, Kevin Slowey, Tyler Chatwood, Clayton Mortensen and Esmil Rogers on starting rotation, it is looking pretty obvious that the Rockies have a clear plan ahead for the upcoming season.
