Colorado Rockies’ Cuddyer reaches milestones as hitting streak extends to 27 games – MLB news
The Colorado Rockies are going strong this season after having a tough season last year where they lost a record 98 games. Currently second in the National League West, the team has much to celebrate in terms of group as well as individual achievements.
Michael Cuddyer is one of these reasons as the veteran right fielder has now had a 27 game hitting streak and has reached base in 46 consecutive games. It is the longest streak in the Major League since Baltimore Orioles' Kevin Millar who was able to reach
base in 52 games in 2007.
Rockies manager Walt Weiss said that it has been fun watching Michael this season and it is great to see him being recognised for the good work.
“It's been fun watching him do this,” Weiss said. “It's nice to see him get some recognition. He's a great player.”
Michael is currently hitting at a .344 batting average which does show his consistency. When he was inquired about if it does get in his head while playing the game, he said that it is not entirely possible to keep it out of the head.
He said that although getting a hit was on his mind due to the fact that it was the eighth innings when he got his hit, he also knew that the team needed it.
“It's hard not to,” Cuddyer said, laughing. “But at the same time, what kept me from being anxious was the fact we needed baserunners in that situation.”
The hitter admitted that the streak and the hype related with it can get to your head. However, he does understand that his primary job is to play for the team and not getting his job done properly does bother him.
“Obviously, it [the streak] is in your head, but there's a job at hand,” Cuddyer said. “I was upset with myself that first at-bat because the job was to get that guy in from third with less than two outs, and I didn't. That was bigger than the streak to
me, and I didn't come through.”
Michael Cuddyer is a true asset for the Rockies who can most certainly be instrumental in getting the team into the post-season in 2013.
