Colorado Rockies’ Dexter Fowler coming of an age - MLB News
Dexter Fowler is only 26-year-old but shows the maturity of a senior statesman. The centre fielder has given signs of him being a dependable option for the Colorado Rockies in the time to come.
The hitter had a .300 batting average and an on-base percentage of .389 on top of that. His 53 RBI’s and career high 13 home-runs this season did not do his cause any harm. The batter had 136 hits, with 29 extra base hits in 454 at-bats during 2012. These
averages were much better than his overall numbers in his four year Major League career.
Dexter understands that his role after four seasons with the team is evolving and he is someone to whom youngster look up to. "You see some guys that are coming to me, asking me questions: 'How should I do this?'" Fowler said. "That's a good sign when you're
in that position. To be able to direct them the right way is definitely a blessing."
The Atlanta, Georgia native was drafted by the Colorado Rockies in 2004 out of Milton High School in the 14th round of draft. The switch hitter rejected offers from University of Miami and Harvard, opting to play for the Rockies.
Fowler is headed to arbitration and was signed for $2.35 million by the Rockies last year. The club has a history of handing out multi-year deals to players who are eligible for arbitration in order to avoid risk of losing them as free agents.
Fowler had a slow start to Spring Training in 2012. He historically picks the pace after the All-Star break, a sequence he would like to break and get good numbers from the onset of the season.
Fowler himself has expressed the desire to continue with the Rockies. "It would be a blessing," he said. "That's what you want. You want a core and to be able to play with guys."
The hitter also believes that the team has a lot of potential to do well and it’s a matter of getting things in the right place. He also said that getting things in order early rather than late will be the key. "We definitely have a lot of potential to win,"
he said. "We have the parts in place. We just need to live up to the expectations, play up to our expectations early."
The Colorado Rockies now have a new manager and some new coaches as well. The team is looking to move forward and improve from its worst ever returns in 2012. Talented players like Dexter Fowler will play a major role in returning the team to its winning
ways and the management has to make sure that they utilise these talented players in the best of ways.
