Colorado Rockies’ Dexter Fowler looks to the upcoming 2013 season - MLB News
Dexter Fowler had a magnificent year in 2012 as the switch hitter posted an even .300 batting average with a .389 on-base percentage. He was one of the brighter spots of the Colorado Rockies’ otherwise dull campaign.
The 26-year-old has since taken the role of a senior statesman in the squad and the youngsters are turning to him for advice. He does not feel bad about it even though he has played four seasons so far and a part of a fifth one.
However, Dexter’s 2012 did not start with the bang it ended with and he struggled big time during Spring Training. His .149 batting average in 21 games certainly did not give signs of what was to come later on.
Spring Training is upon us once again and the centre-fielder is not bothered about history. For now, he says he is just concentrating on the upcoming season.
"I'm not really worried about it, just trying to prepare for the season," Fowler said.
Dexter is also in the process of arbitration with the Colorado ballclub and there is a little chance that arbitration will be avoided. The hearing can take place anytime between now and February 20.
The Rockies are offering Dexter $4.25 million whereas the player himself is looking for $5.15 million. The arbitration panel will listen to both sides before deciding on whose figure should be granted.
Fowler is aware that he has got a job and it will pay him well no matter whose salary is accepted by the panel. He is looking forward to the matter being resolved so that he can get over with it.
"I'm not really worrying about it -- I have a job," said a laughing Fowler, "Obviously, I want it resolved and over. I want to be able to go out and just go play."
There have been talks about him being one of the potential trades that the Rockies can use to get some good pitching options. However, nothing has so far materialised and for now it remains to be an unlikely event.
Rockies had a massive struggle last year with their pitchers producing the worst numbers in Major League Baseball. Most of the guys were filling in for the more experienced yet injured pitchers and perhaps had to step onto the mound earlier then they should
have.
Dexter stated that he has discussed his potential trade with Bill Geivett, the senior vice president of baseball operations for the Colorado ballclub and said that he has been assured that if something was to take place, Dexter will be the first person to
know.
"He said my name had been floating around, but I'd be the first to know if something happened," Fowler said.
Dexter Fowler is indeed an asset for the Rockies and one hopes that he will stay with the ballclub. However, even if the Rockies decide to trade him for some pitching arms, it is certain that Dexter will be able to find his way to greatness.
