Colorado Rockies’ Manager wants respect for each other amongst his players - MLB News
The Colorado Rockies have had a forgettable 2012 season with a 64-98 result, their worst in the 20 seasons in the Major League for the franchise. The poor show forced Jim Tracy, their manager during the season to resign
After much deliberation and considering many potential candidates, the position went to Walt Weiss, a former Rockies’ team member who was at that time involved in coaching at Regis Jesuit High School.
Walt is well aware of the fact that he needs to create an environment where peers are respected and players trust each other. He knows that talent enough will not do the job for his team and they have to improve constantly on and off the field to get better
results in a tough group of teams.
"We've got to try to create an environment where we respect each other and we trust each other, and then you've got a chance at something special," Weiss said recently. "If you're just counting on running your talent out there, it's a tough league. It's
tough to win just doing that."
Weiss said that the performance matters but for now getting the players in the right mind set is more crucial. He is aware that the players will have to develop a relationship of respect amongst each other in the first place.
He said, "So we've got to create an environment that's different -- not necessarily different but special. And you do that by developing relationships and caring for one another and earning the respect of each other. For me, that's more important than the
X's and O's right now."
The team has certain shortcomings and the first and foremost is pitching. Coors Field, their home ball park, is placed on a high altitude which means the ball will carry further in the lighter atmosphere. They will be looking to make sure that their pitchers
can get more outs via ways other than fly balls to post better returns. Last year, Rockies had the worst numbers in pitching in all of the Major League.
They will also have to make sure that the pitchers remain fit to play during the length of the season. The team had to suffer because of injuries to main pitchers during the course of the season and backup guys had to take up the duty.
They will also have to make sure that crucial position players such as shortstop Troy Tulowitzki, Michael Cuddyer, Chris Nelson, Todd Helton and catcher Ramon Hernandez all remain fit during the season. This will be crucial for the team that has struggled
to produce runs on the road.
If the experienced lot is fit and hitting well, it will make the life of Dante Bichette, the recently appointed hitting coach of the Rockies, a lot easier.
All in all, we can conclude that the Colorado Rockies will be looking to change their attitude and fitness levels to be able to perform well in the 2013 season and beyond. Walt Weiss is looking to get the right mind set instilled in his players and a success
in that will help him in a big way to perform better in the long run.
