Colorado Rockies Michael Cuddyer talks about team’s direction in 2013- MLB News
The Colorado Rockies became a part of the Major League Baseball in 1993. The team saw overwhelming support in its first year, with record crowds coming into see the Colorado ball club play.
The Rockies have given good performances for the most part in its brief history, bagging its first National League Championship in 2007. The Rockies have in all made three post-season appearances thus far.
The team’s performance has been steadily going down recently and in 2012, the team saw its worst year since it took the field, posting a 64-98 record. As a reaction to this low, Jim Tracey, the Rockies’ manager resigned from his post and some changes were
also made in the coaching staff.
After a detailed search and interviewing several candidates, both internal and external and a long thought process, Walt Weiss was selected as the new manager.
Walt has a vision to take the team forward and make it competitive once again. He is himself a former Rockies player who was a part of the franchise between 1994 and 1998.
Infielder Michael Cuddyer, who will be playing his second season with the Colorado ball club, believes that the team is headed in the right direction and the staff for the team has settled well.
"The direction has been mapped out as far as the staff is concerned," Cuddyer told mlb.com in a recent interview.
Michael thinks that once the spring training gets underway, the issues related with players should be ironed out and the players should be well settled before the start of the regular season.
"Once we get to Spring Training, personnel-wise, things are going to be ironed out," he said.
Cuddyer says that the onus of moving in the right direction and performing well during the upcoming season lies with the players. They will have to understand their responsibilities and own them in order to get results.
He foresees that as the season draws closer, the direction in which the players will need to move will get clearer.
"That's up to us to go into the season with that goal and purpose and understanding of what we're going to do and how we need to do it. As the season comes upon us, that direction will become more and more defined," Michael told mlb.com.
It is clear that the old war horse wants the players to take the responsibility of taking the team forward. They have a great manager in Walt Weiss and a more than capable coaching staff to guide them.
But in the end of the day, it is the players on the field who have to deliver and who have to take the fight to the opposition teams. One hopes that the Rockies’ players will understand this and give their fans plenty to cheer about in 2013.
