Colorado Rockies’ Rex Brothers learning his craft well in the Majors- MLB News
Colorado Rockies relief pitcher Rex Brothers had a tough going at the start of 2012 season. He posted numbers that he would have not desired and had a trip back to the Colorado Springs Sky Sox, the club’s Triple-A affiliate before making a strong comeback.
The 25-year-old who had a 2-2 win-loss record with a high 5.87 ERA early on made  a great recovery and posted a 6-0 winning record with a 3.72 ERA on his return to the Majors. His posted an overall 8-2 winning record with a 3.86 ERA.
The left-handed pitcher acknowledges that he has learnt things the hard way and he had to brave the rough times.
"I have had my rough stretches, learned from them and moved on. More times than not, that's how you learn your lessons, the hard way," Brothers said.
Rex understands that it’s a constant learning curve and one cannot be complacent or take back seat. There is always more to learn and that is what he intends to do. He has worked hard to remove some of the earlier issues he had and is willing to improve
further by constantly looking back at things and evaluating how they could be done better.
"That's part of being a competitor, being a good self-evaluator," Brothers said. "I've had my times I've had to step back and address some things, try to get back on the right foot. Even when things are going well, it's best for me to still step back and
say, 'Which areas can I get better at?' and not get that sense of complacency. That may have affected me before," Rex said.
Brothers had to work particularly on his approach of going for strike outs, which sometimes back fired. He has also developed a changeup which will most likely serve him quite well in future. His consistent improvement can be assessed by the fact that he
posted a 1.52 ERA after August1, which is quite a performance.
Rex Brothers is still in his early days in the Major League and still is getting hold of things. It is a good sign for the Rockies that he is willing to learn and put more effort in improving his game. The ball club itself can take a leaf out of Rex’s book
and act upon it.
