Colorado Rockies beat Arizona Diamondbacks 3-1, sweat over Chacin’s injury - MLB News
The Colorado Rockies continued their impressive form as the team posted a close 3-1 win over the Arizona Diamondbacks on Friday, April 19, 2013. The team has now won an impressive seven in a row and has a 12-4 winning record.
The team is currently at the top of the National League West and is two and a half games ahead second place holders San Francisco Giants. They have a seven game winning streak and have yet to lose a home game as well.
The sun finally came out and the weather was much better. Jhoulys Chacin threw a run-less six plus innings much to the delight of the local 23000 plus fans. However, he developed a pain in his oblique or back. He got his third win of the year nonetheless
and has a 3-0 record at the moment.
The only run for the Diamondbacks came in the top of the ninth which could only damage the score line but did not have any serious effect on the outcome of the game.
The score for the Rockies came in the form of a two-run home-run by Troy Tulowitzki in the fourth and later with the help of a sacrifice fly by Chacin in the fifth innings.
Kirk Gibson, the manager for the Diamondbacks was all praise for the pitching by Chacin. He believed that he has not seen the 25-year-old throw better than this. He was very willing to give him his due credit.
"He was throwing all his pitches over for strikes," Gibson said. "We never really got ahead of him. He dumped his slider over early in the count and we were just laying off it. It had good depth to it. That's probably the best I've seen him throw. Give him
credit there."
Meanwhile the manager for the Rockies, Walt Weiss, is certainly very happy with his team’s progress. He said that is it not possible to get the long balls every time and one has to improvise when the occasion calls for it.
"We're not going to bang the ball around the park every night in this league, so you've got to be able to win a variety of ways," Weiss said. "Tonight we did it with a great outing by Jhoulys and a big hit by Tulo."
Traditionally Coors Field has been ideal for hitters since the high altitude allows the balls to carry further. The pitchers for the Rockies have been performing well so far, something that was not the case last year.
The team seems to be moving in the right direction at the moment and has momentum as well. Should they carry on with the performance like this, they will certainly be posting some great results this season.
