Colorado Rockies beat Los Angeles Dodgers 5-3 to win series 2-1 – MLB Update
The National League’s Colorado Rockies overpowered the Los Angeles Dodgers 5-3 in the final outing of the three-game series at Coors Field in Denver on Sunday, August 21 to take the series 2-1.
Rockies Carlos Gonzalez and Seth Smith each launched two-run homer. Gonzalez hammered to lead the game off in the bottom of the first inning against the Dodgers' struggling starter Chad Billingsley. Seth Smith launched to get the Rockies back into leading
position in the bottom of the seventh inning.
Then the Rockies’ shortstop Troy Tulowitzki finalised the game with his sacrifice fly hit to centre in the bottom of the eighth inning. Rockies earned their first win on Sunday since they won over Chicago Cubs 9-5 on April 17.
"The worst part was talking about it all the time," said Tulowitzki, "Then you start to think about it. Obviously, we are out there playing and it is in the back of our heads."
It was also the first win for the Rockies’ starter Kevin Millwood, who worked seven innings and went for seven hits and three runs along with one walk. He also punched-out four batters over his 103 pitches to enter in the winning column of the 2011 regular
season.
Dodgers’ James Loney made four hits including one home-run and scored one run and two RBIs over four at-bats. Matt Kemp also made two hits and one run over four at-bats. Shortstop Justin Sellers also added one run over three at-bats without any hit.
Billingsley had another bad day with the ball, as he allowed five runs on three hits, two of which were home-runs, over his seven innings. Although he made seven strike-outs with 4.07 ERA, Billingsley received his third straight and tenth overall loss of
the season.
It was the fifth loss of the Dodgers in last seven games and manager Don Mattingly will be under great pressure for the up-coming games. Dodgers now have to visit St. Louis Cardinals for a three game series. The Dodgers dropped to 3-1 in the previous series
with the Cardinals.
