Colorado Rockies beat St. Louis Cardinals 8-2 as De La Rosa throws near perfect game - MLB Update
Colorado Rockies overwhelmed a strong opponent in the St. Louis Cardinals 8-2 at Busch Field. The game was a special one for pitcher Jorge De La Rosa who almost shut the opposition out.
The Rockies scored in the game during the third innings courtesy of a three-run blast from Troy Tulowitzki. It allowed the team to move forward by three runs and took the pressure off Jorge.
Colorado was able to score in the sixth again with a two-run home-run by Charlie Blackmon. Reid Brignac scored a two-run RBI double and Dexter Fowler got an RBI single in the top of the eighth to make it 8-0.
However, the Cardinals got on the scoreboard courtesy of an RBI single and a sacrifice fly in the bottom of the ninth.
Troy Tulowitzki feels that the go ahead three-run home-run allowed De La Rosa to play his natural game and not worry about the runs on the board. The hitter also felt that it was an important home-run for the batting unit that was somewhat struggling until
that moment.
"We hadn't scored in a while, and had gotten a big hit in a while, so to hit a three-run homer to put us on the board and get us up in the game, it definitely was a big hit," Tulowitzki said. "I think it took the pressure of Jorge so he didn't feel like
he had to be perfect, even though he was really close to being perfect."
De La Rosa himself was pleased with how things went and said that he felt quite good every time he threw a pitch. He did feel a bit tired towards the end as it had been a long day at the office but he was glad that the game was won.
"Every time I pitch, I start feeling stronger," De La Rosa said. "I feel very good, but not in the last inning. I started feeling a little tired. It was a long time since I threw that many pitches. Anyway, it was a good game. We won."
Jorge was also pleased by the guidance catcher Wilin Rosario provided him with. He said that the catcher had done his homework and he followed his lead.
Walt Weiss, the manager of the Rockies, expressed his delight at the performance from both Troy and Jorge as both were crucial for arresting a four game skid that the Rockies had experienced. It was also an important away win against one of the power houses
of Major League Baseball.
The Rockies will be looking to get some more wins as they continue their road trip. For the moment, they seem to be doing rather well and should be able to perform consistently if the team plays together in the same way.
