Colorado Rockies defeat Houston Astros 5-3 – MLB Update
Colorado Rockies defeated Houston Astros 5-3 at the Minute Maid Park in Houston, Texas on Friday, April 6 in their regular season encounter of the 2012 Major League Baseball.
The Astros put up another poor show as they struggled to find any momentum in their game play. They will be looking to achieve better results in their upcoming games to change the course of their destiny.
Houston led the score in the eighth inning but lack of concentration resulted in a disaster for them as Colorado picked two runs in the ninth. Manager Brad Mills was very unhappy with the errors his team made.
"We had some mental mistakes that I'm probably more concerned about than anything else," he said. "Those things, we're going to address ... they did a great job of that in spring training, but we're going to work on those and move on."
Rockies’ Manager Jim Tracy was very pleased to see his tactics working on Friday night. The skipper used Eric Young as a pinch runner and the move paid dividends for him as Young scored the go ahead run on an error in the ninth inning.
"It's a blessing to have the speed and it would be stupid of me not to try to utilize it to the best of my advantage," Young said.
Troy Tulowitzki also made a useful contribution, hitting a home run in the ninth to help the Rockies clinch a closely contested game.
"This is also the aggression thing I've been talking about," Tracy said, referring to Young's play. "You're not going to discourage aggression because you turn the ballclub into a 90-feet-at-a-time club, and I don't want that."
The Rockies made the most of on hand opportunities in a game that turned out to be quite competitive. Exploiting the conditions absolutely brilliantly, the Rockies put their opponents under immense pressure in dying stages of the game.
Although Colorado looked a bit out of sorts during Spring Training Session, they certainly have the ability to make it to the playoffs. It will be interesting to see if the Rockies can cheer up their fans by living up to their high expectations.
